Die Soziologie an der Universität zu Köln versteht sich als eine theoretisch angeleitete und empirisch orientierte Wissenschaft. Daher steht - neben den soziologischen Theorien - die Vermittlung von Kenntnissen in sozialwissenschaftlichen Methoden und Statistik im Mittelpunkt der Ausbildung.

Das Studium der Soziologie ist in Köln ab dem 1.10.2008 auf drei konsekutiven Studienniveaus mit den folgenden Studienabschlüssen möglich: Bachelor, Master, Promotion/Doctoral Studies.

Cologne Graduate School in Management, Economics, and Social Sciences

Starting in October 2008, the newly established Graduate School is the integrated PhD program of the Faculty of Management, Economics, and Social Sciences at the University of Cologne. It encompasses researchers from business administration, economics, sociology, political sciences, and economic psychology.

Each year, a limited number of scholarships will be offered to the very best graduates in management, economics, and the social sciences. These so-called WiSo scholars will be recruited internationally across the three disciplines of the Faculty. The Graduate School will also provide the infrastructure for international doctoral exchange.

Graduiertenkolleg SOCLIFE

SOCLIFE is an interdisciplinary Graduiertenkolleg bringing together more than 10 professors from the University of Cologne from different fields of the social and economic sciences, statistics and law as well as at least 10 collaborating experts from other universities in and outside of Europe. Cross-national comparisons are a research strategy common to many disciplines. But there are different types of comparisons with strengths and weaknesses. SOCLIFE aims at bringing together these approaches using multi-level research designs and types of analysis.

International Max Planck Research School on the Social and Political Constitution of the Economy (IMPRS-SPCE):

PhD Program in Cologne at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies and the University of Cologne

The International Max Planck Research School on the Social and Political Constitution of the Economy (IMPRS-SPCE) is a newly established international PhD program offered jointly by the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies (MPIfG) and the Department of Economics and Social Sciences of the University of Cologne.

Aiming to combine and develop the approaches of new economic sociology, comparative political economy and organization studies, the School's research investigates the complex linkages between economic and social action.

The IMPRS admits up to seven students a year. Applications can be submitted as of January 15. The deadline for applications is March 15. Notification is in June, and the program begins on October 1.
